This is a cavalry regiment within the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps of the Canadian Armed Forces. While its official title is the King’s Own Calgary Regiment (RCAC), it is often referred to in conversation by the shorter, punchier name: The King’s Own. A Storied Past
The Reserve Force regiment was first authorized on April 1, 1910, encompassing both a cavalry regiment and a machine gun battalion. This was the same time that the 103rd Calgary Rifles Regiment was permitted to form. Following a reorganization on March 15, 1920, the unit was split into two separate regiments: “The Alberta Regiment” (now the South Alberta Light Horse) and “The Calgary Regiment.” Another split occurred on May 15, 1924, creating “The Calgary Highlanders” and “The Calgary Regiment.” After a series of name changes and transformations, the regiment’s reserve units were disbanded on December 14, 1936. The history of The King’s Own Calgary Regiment is one of constant evolution, making its modern-day role all the more compelling.
During the First World War, various battalions of the regiment served in crucial ways:
- The 50th Battalion fought in France and what is now Belgium until the end of the war, serving as part of the 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade.
- The 89th and 137th Battalions acted as reserve units. Their personnel were used to reinforce Canadian troops already fighting on the front lines, preparing and sending soldiers to bolster the forces overseas.
The Second World War marked a significant shift when the regiment was converted into a tank unit. Key operations during this period stand out:
- They were the first Canadian armoured unit to engage in the tragic raid on Dieppe in 1942.
- The unit played a vital role in the Italian Campaign, landing in Sicily and later on the mainland as part of the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade.
- Towards the end of WWII, the tank unit transferred to North-West Europe, where they continued fighting until victory was secured.
Another crucial period spans from 2002 to 2014. During this time, The King’s Own Calgary Regiment sent soldiers to support various Canadian units serving in Afghanistan, reinforcing and bolstering the troops deployed in South-West Asia.
The King’s Own Calgary Regiment: Today’s Role
Today, this Reserve Force armoured unit provides reconnaissance support to the 41 Canadian Brigade Group. The King’s Own Calgary Regiment is headquartered at the Mewata Armory in Calgary, Alberta.
The regiment’s emblem (or badge) is steeped in deep symbolic meaning. At its heart is a silver shield featuring a red cross, topped by an autumn maple leaf. A bison stands proudly on the leaf, while the upper part of the shield features a sunset over a local landscape, adding a distinct regional flavour. The shield itself is surmounted by the Royal Crown, and flanked by a horse on the right and a bull on the left. The base of the composition includes a rose (the symbol of England), shamrocks (for Ireland), and thistles (for Scotland). All of this is united on three gold ribbons, with the top ribbon bearing the regimental motto: FORWARD.
Modern Warfare and Evolution
Since 2020, there has been a significant change in the training and operational philosophy for reconnaissance units. Under the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps Directive, all armoured reconnaissance units have transitioned to a Cavalry Position. This emphasizes the effectiveness of soldiers across all aspects of mechanized warfare.
This new approach demands that soldiers are prepared for reconnaissance, targeted defence, and fast, aggressive offensive operations. These missions will utilize a much broader spectrum of equipment, ranging from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) and light G-Wagen off-road vehicles to Armoured Tactical Patrol Vehicles (TAPV) and heavy Main Battle Tanks (MBT).
Another new combat task for the regiment involves reviving its assault troop capabilities, putting a renewed emphasis on mobile, rapid, and hard-hitting operations.

On January 28, 2025, The King’s Own Calgary Regiment held a Regimental Parade under the supervision of Lieutenant-Colonel Fisher. This event was a unique opportunity to celebrate the dedication and achievements of several regiment members. Promotions to Corporal were awarded to Mirza and Cole. The King Charles III Coronation Order was presented to two deserving members: Sergeants Ellis-Warden and Peters. Such honours are only bestowed upon members of the regiment who have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment.
