However, it was the President’s stop in Calgary immediately following the official sessions that gave the trip its deeply personal and human touch.

The city welcomed the Ukrainian delegation with open arms and significant visibility. Near Calgary International Airport, travelers and arriving dignitaries were greeted by a massive digital billboard flashing “Welcome President Zelenskyy.” The gesture carried a dual significance.

The creative vision behind the display was Ivan Ostapenko. Roman Yosyfiv, the initiative’s lead and President of the Calgary Branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), noted that the message wasn’t just for the President—it was a reminder to the entire international community:

“Ukraine is still fighting and needs our collective support.”

Connecting with the Community

After the summit, President Zelenskyy held a special meeting with local UCC representatives and activists who had traveled from across Canada. The dialogue focused on the current state of the frontline and the coordination of long-term aid.

The gathering became a platform for mutual gratitude. The community sought to honor Zelenskyy’s resilience, while the President expressed his profound thanks to Canada for its unwavering commitment to the Ukrainian people.

“We stand with you.”

This short but powerful message echoed throughout Calgary. President Zelenskyy was presented with three iconic items:

The White Smithbilt Hat – A world-renowned symbol of Albertan hospitality and honor. To receive this hat is to be welcomed as one of our own.

An Ostrich Egg Pysanka – A unique, hand-painted piece by a Calgary artist, blending traditional Ukrainian techniques with local materials to symbolize life and rebirth.

A History of Early Ukrainian Settlers – A poignant reminder that Ukrainians helped build this country over 130 years ago and remain an integral part of its fabric today.

The Enduring Canada-Ukraine Partnership

The 2025 visit reaffirmed that Ukraine has a reliable stronghold in Canada. From the G7 halls in Kananaskis to the crowded streets of Calgary, the call for unity remained the same. Alberta’s traditional symbols and the diaspora’s fierce support serve as a reminder: Ukraine’s fight for freedom is a shared cause for the entire free world.

Canada continues to lead in supporting Ukraine across several key areas: Military aid (including over 400 Senator and LAV 6.0 armored vehicles, 155mm ammunition, NASAMS air defense systems, and the training of 47,000 troops via Operation UNIFIER); Financial aid (over $12 billion in direct support and pioneering the use of frozen Russian assets); and Humanitarian efforts (funding demining, grid restoration, and mental health programs for veterans).

This consistent support underscores that Canada views a sovereign Ukraine not just as a partner, but as a vital component of global security. The message from Ottawa remains clear: support will continue for as long as it takes to achieve a just peace.

World leaders’ visits are often confined to sterile boardrooms, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s arrival in Alberta was a striking exception.
