This was the same time that the 103rd Calgary Rifles Regiment was permitted to form. Following a reorganization on March 15, 1920, the unit was split into two separate regiments: &#8220;The Alberta Regiment&#8221; (now the South Alberta Light Horse) and &#8220;The Calgary Regiment.&#8221; Another split occurred on May 15, 1924, creating &#8220;The Calgary Highlanders&#8221; and &#8220;The Calgary Regiment.&#8221; After a series of name changes and transformations, the regiment&#8217;s reserve units were disbanded on December 14, 1936. The history of The King&#8217;s Own Calgary Regiment is one of constant evolution, making its modern-day role all the more compelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the First World War, various battalions of the regiment served in crucial ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The 50th Battalion fought in France and what is now Belgium until the end of the war, serving as part of the 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The 89th and 137th Battalions acted as reserve units. Their personnel were used to reinforce Canadian troops already fighting on the front lines, preparing and sending soldiers to bolster the forces overseas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Second World War marked a significant shift when the regiment was converted into a tank unit. <strong>Key operations during this period stand out:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They were the <strong>first Canadian armoured unit to engage in the tragic raid on Dieppe in 1942.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The unit played a vital role in the Italian Campaign, landing in Sicily and later on the mainland as part of the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Towards the end of WWII, the tank unit transferred to North-West Europe, where they continued fighting until victory was secured.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Another crucial period spans from 2002 to 2014. The King&#8217;s Own Calgary Regiment is headquartered at the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgaryes.com\/en\/eternal\/mewata-armory-in-calgary-a-historic-military-landmark\">Mewata Armory in Calgary<\/a>, Alberta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regiment&#8217;s emblem (or badge) is steeped in deep symbolic meaning. At its heart is a silver shield featuring a red cross, topped by an autumn maple leaf. A bison stands proudly on the leaf, while the upper part of the shield features a sunset over a local landscape, adding a distinct regional flavour. The shield itself is surmounted by the Royal Crown, and flanked by a horse on the right and a bull on the left. The base of the composition includes a rose (the symbol of England), shamrocks (for Ireland), and thistles (for Scotland). Under the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps Directive, all armoured reconnaissance units have transitioned to a <strong>Cavalry Position<\/strong>. This emphasizes the effectiveness of soldiers across all aspects of mechanized warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new approach demands that soldiers are prepared for reconnaissance, targeted defence, and fast, aggressive offensive operations. These missions will utilize a much broader spectrum of equipment, ranging from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) and light G-Wagen off-road vehicles to Armoured Tactical Patrol Vehicles (TAPV) and heavy Main Battle Tanks (MBT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another new combat task for the regiment involves reviving its assault troop capabilities, putting a renewed emphasis on <strong>mobile, rapid, and hard-hitting operations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"564\" height=\"423\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.calgaryes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2025\/05\/tapv-calgary-2.webp_.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.calgaryes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2025\/05\/tapv-calgary-2.webp_.png 564w, https:\/\/cdn.calgaryes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2025\/05\/tapv-calgary-2.webp_-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Joining_the_Regiment\"><\/span>Joining the Regiment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Calgary residents interested in joining the regiment can find their nearest recruiting centre. As an Army Reservist, you gain access to important insurance coverage, including medical, dental, and educational benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 28, 2025, The King&#8217;s Own Calgary Regiment held a Regimental Parade under the supervision of Lieutenant-Colonel Fisher. This event was a unique opportunity to celebrate the dedication and achievements of several regiment members. Promotions to Corporal were awarded to Mirza and Cole. The King Charles III Coronation Order was presented to two deserving members: Sergeants Ellis-Warden and Peters.
